Working with a group of people ages 60 to 85, researchers at the University of California Irvine gave each of them seven vials, each containing a different natural oil, and a diffuser. One group of the adults received cartridges that had tiny amounts of the oils; the other group’s containers were full.

MAJOR RESEARCH: LITTLE REAL DATA SHOWS ANY CORRELATION BETWEEN GREENHOUSE EMISSIONS AND GLOBAL TEMPS
Just-released Norwegian research says that over the past 200 years, there is no real world data that shows any significant link between rising so-called greenhouse gasses like Carbon Dioxide (C02) and global temperature variations.
HAS THE WORLD CROSSED THE SOLAR ENERGY TIPPING POINT?
Based on current trends in cost and technology development, the world may already have passed a tipping point leading to solar energy inevitably becoming the world’s dominant source of electricity by 2050, according to a study by University College London and the University of Exeter.
REDESIGNED REDOX FLOW BATTERY COULD POWER YOUR HOUSE
Electrochemists at the University of Cincinnati have reinvented the redox flow battery. Their design could one day power your house.
ANCESTORS’ DNA COULD BECOME THE NEWEST ANTIBIOTIC
Superbugs that resist known antibiotics kill more than two million people a year worldwide, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a number that could reach 10 million by 2050. Now those bugs may finally have met their doom, thanks to strings of DNA salvaged from our prehistoric ancestors.
HYDROGEN AIRPLANE BEGINS SERIES OF TEST AND DEMO FLIGHTS
In March, California-based Universal Hydrogen announced a successful maiden flight of the world’s largest airplane powered by a fuel cell burning hydrogen. In late September, the company began a series of test and demonstration flights to show that hydrogen can be a viable aviation fuel for regional cargo and passenger transport.
GENE-EDITED CHICKENS NOW RESISTANT TO AVIAN FLU. IS IT A GOOD THING?
After looking at chickens’ genome to see what makes them susceptible to avian flu, researchers at the University of Edinburgh have used the CRISPR gene editing technique to create chickens better able to resist the infection.
SYNTHETIC ORGANISMS AS MEDICAL DELIVERY VEHICLES INSIDE YOUR BODY?
Small groups of scientists around the world are pioneering a new field called "hybrid peptide-DNA nanostructures." The purpose: to create nano-scale life forms that can patrol your body to fight invading viruses and bacteria, diagnose illness, and deliver medicines.
STEEL COMPANY GOES ALL IN ON NUCLEAR FUSION
In the first agreement between a manufacturing company and fusion-energy research venture, Nucor—the largest steel producer in the U.S.—has formed a venture with Helion Energy, which is developing a nuclear fusion technology using water.
ELECTRODES GROWN INSIDE LIVING BRAINS
At Sweden’s Lund University, researchers have succeeded in growing tiny electrodes inside the brains of zebrafish and medicinal leeches. If scalable to humans, the devices could pave the road to new treatments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases and other brain-based conditions.
