Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, said nuclear war between nuclear powers is unacceptable, and must be avoided.
“The risk that a non-nuclear confrontation between nuclear powers will turn into a nuclear war is immense,” Lavrov said. “It is necessary to avoid any military clash between nuclear powers, even with the use of conventional weapons. The escalation may become uncontrollable.”
The top Russian diplomat noted that in June 2021, both President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin stated that a nuclear war “cannot be won and must never be fought.” The five nuclear-capable countries also made a similar statement earlier this year.
Researchers at Princeton’s Science and Global Security program said 34.1 million people could die and another 57.4 million people could be severely injured within the first few hours of the start of a nuclear war between Russia and the U.S.
“But that’s not all,” the researchers said. “The overall death toll would be even higher due to long-term consequences of a nuclear war, including radioactive fallout and global cooling of the Earth’s atmosphere, researchers add. Even a limited nuclear exchange between India and Pakistan could put one billion people at risk of starvation and another 1.3 billion at risk of severe food insecurity due to global cooling, according to a 2013 study by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.”
TRENDPOST: The Trends Journal has reported extensively on the evolution of the war in Ukraine and the increasing threat of a nuclear confrontation with each passing day. (See “EU BORRELL SAYS RUSSIAN ARMY WOULD BE ‘ANNIHILATED’ IF PUTIN USES NUKES IN UKRAINE,” “PUTIN SENDS STERN WARNING TO THE WEST, VOWS TO KEEP UP FIGHT IN UKRAINE” and “PUTIN WARNS WEST TO STOP SENDING DEADLY WEAPONS OR RUSSIA WILL HIT ‘OBJECTS THAT WE HAVEN’T YET STRUCK.’”).
We Told You So
Repeating what we have long noted, Lavrov said the West is doing “everything to increase their almost direct participation in the conflict in Ukraine, where he said they are essentially waging war against Russia through the hands of Ukrainians.
“The goal has been announced to defeat Russia on the battlefield or even destroy Russia,” Lavrov said. “How can the goal of defeating Russia not bear significance for strategic stability, considering that they want to destroy a key strategic stability actor?”
Lavrov said it has been a “dangerous trend” to discuss nuclear war, but Russian president Vladimir Putin has said he will defend the new Russian territory in Ukraine with “all the forces and resources we have.”
TRENDPOST: Lavrov noted that under Moscow’s nuclear doctrine, Russia can only use these weapons as a retaliatory response to an enemy strike.
Last month, in an article titled, “BIDEN WARNS WORLD THAT RISK OF NUCLEAR ARMAGEDDON IS HIGHEST SINCE CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS,” we noted that Biden said he does not see how Russia could employ a tactical nuclear weapon and it not result in Armageddon.
David Petraeus, the retired general, said that the U.S. and its allies would unleash hell on Russia if it uses nuclear weapons. He said the alliance would destroy Russia’s troops, and equipment before sinking Russia’s Black Sea fleet.
“Just to give you a hypothetical, we would respond by leading a NATO—a collective—effort that would take out every Russian conventional force that we can see and identify on the battlefield in Ukraine and also in Crimea and every ship in the Black Sea.”
