In the scramble to get hold of enough chips to serve the exploding AI market, companies are falling back on a technology created more than a decade ago.

The New York Times has hired Zach Seward, co-founder of the tech, business, and lifestyle website Quartz, as its first editorial director for artificial intelligence.

IBM and Meta Platforms are among more than 50 companies involved in AI development that have come together to form the AI Alliance, a group pushing for “open innovation and open science” in AI development.

Pope Francis has added his voice to the chorus of calls for a binding international agreement to govern AI, urging rules ensuring that the technology is used ethically and reflects the human values of compassion, forgiveness, mercy, and morality.

Meta Platforms, scurrying to catch up with Google, Microsoft, and other major web presences dazzling audiences with AI apps, is testing at least 20 new AI features it’s added to its search tool, advertisements, and other offerings throughout Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. 

Nvidia owns as much as 80 percent of the market for the special graphics-processing computer chips needed by AI systems, but that market share will shrink, beginning in the new year.

Google has created an AI that it sees as a “doctor in your pocket” that can scour the Internet to answer your questions about your health, calm your nerves about a symptom, or urge you to visit your doctor for a diagnosis.
