Jewish people living in Europe have expressed concerns about an increase in antisemitism as Israel continues to reject international calls for a ceasefire in Gaza after a major 7 October attack by Hamas that killed 1,300 Jews.
“There is a feeling of helplessness that has never been experienced before,” Joel Rubinfeld of the Belgian League Against Anti-Semitism, told The New York Times.
One of the attacks targeted a Jewish cemetery in Vienna that resulted in holy books being destroyed and portions of the main building at a near-total loss. CNN noted that the last time this particular cemetery was targeted was 85 years ago during Kristallnacht.
“After the seventh of October, antisemitism grew dramatically here in Austria, here in Europe, all over the world,” Oskar Deutsch, head of the Jewish Community in Vienna, told CNN.
Gérald Darmanin, French interior minister said there have been more than 800 antisemitic acts in the country, which is about twice as many as in the whole of 2022. Britain had about as many attacks as France in the time period.
There was a massive pro-Palestine protest held in London on Saturday that resulted in 29 arrests. Police said one of the men arrested was found using retrospective facial recognition technology after making antisemitic comments during a speech, according to CNN.
Robert Habeck, Germany’s vice chancellor, said he will fight antisemitism by threatening removal from the country. He said, “Antisemitism is not to be tolerated in any form,” according to Politico.
“Anyone who is German will have to answer for it in court. If you’re not German, you also risk your residency status. Anyone who doesn’t have a residence permit provides a reason to be deported,” he said.
TRENDPOST: The New York Times reported that there is some dismay in the Jewish community on how the deadly Hamas attack could somehow create such anti-Jewish backlash. But it was not the attack that caused the backlash, it was Israel’s slaughter in Gaza and more people learning about the deplorable conditions that Gazans have been living in.
Israel killed over 10,000 people in Gaza, mainly children in bombing campaigns. Israeli officials keep selling the bullshit line that they are trying to protect innocents, but blame Hamas for using civilians as human shields. The Times reported that Israel used at least two 2,000-pound bombs in its airstrike on Jabaliya, which killed scores and wounded hundreds.
Human Rights Watch said Israel’s decision to cut off electricity and water to Gaza, block the entry of fuel, food, and all but a trickle of humanitarian aid—including medicines—amounts to “collective punishment,” a war crime.
Unlike other Israeli military attacks in Gaza, The Times noted that images of dead Palestinian women and children “race across social media and feed an anger that has long been festering, particularly among the billions of Muslims living in Europe, over the Israeli control of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank and in Gaza.” The paper wrote, “In this intersectional worldview, the fight against Israel—and often its very existence—becomes part of a global battle of the oppressed for justice and equality. In this good-and-evil matrix, Jews are deemed not to fare well.”

Barack Obama, the former U.S. president, was interviewed on Saturday and seemed to try to strike a balance between supporting Israel without overlooking the Palestinian abuse. He said in order to be constructive, one must see that it is a complex issue.
“That what Hamas did was horrific and there’s no justification for it, and what is also true is that the occupation, and what is happening to Palestinians, is unbearable,” he said.
Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish American political scientist and peace activist., said Obama’s comments were true, but they “don’t get us anywhere.”
“The protocol right now in the news media is everything began on Oct. 7,” he said. “But, in fact, Oct. 7 wasn’t the beginning, Oct. 7 was the climax. It was the climax of a people being immured in a concentration camp for 20 years.”
Indeed, since Netanyahu’s extreme right wing government (as the mainstream media characterized it) came into power last December, we reported on the increases of attacks on Palestinians, the stealing of more of their land and scores of atrocities committed against them by the Israeli government and settlers. Also, long forgotten, were the 39 weeks of hundreds of thousands of Israeli’s taking to the streets in protest to Netanyahu’s Judicial Reform mandate which the Israeli media called a “Civil War.”
