Takeover

Is there an independent anything these days? Small businesses crop up around the country only to be swallowed up by larger corporations, consolidating operations and increasing profitability. These corporations are swallowed up by even larger conglomerates, which do the same on an even larger level. Massive international trade deals are signed before the public is even aware of them and large multi-nationals operate with impunity throughout the world.

Takeover is a trend line years in the making; it’s now fully embedded in the social, economic and political spheres that rule our lives. It drills deeper than the massive consolidations we see in banking, media, health care, retail, etc., on broad national and international scales. Look at your own communities. Look at local and regional consolidations and monopolies that now govern local services and products.

Takeover is pervasive. In 2015, it fully embeds itself in our economic and cultural fabric.

This is a enormous problem, growing all the time. Today Pfizer(#1 in the world) buys Hospira, the largest US manufacturer of injectable drugs.

We all have heard of the “80/20” principle. 80 percent of the sales is derived from 20% of the inventory. How about small, local, “mom and pop” stores that only sell the 20%? Let the Big Box stores carry the expense and cost of the other 80% Mom and pop can charge more for the convenience, fuel savings and time, as well as keeping the money in the local community.

We all know food convenience stores. But, how about Hardware, Stationary, Paint, Healthy and fresh meal prep (for tired workers), Bakery/deli/paper products/barbeque, Fresh produce/Select frozen food, etc., or combinations of these in one store. If these “mom and pops” can buy as a group nationally, they will have the leverage to get good prices and good profits, while the Big Boxes pay for the costs of the other 80%.

The local towns should subsidise store rent in town for three years from property taxes, to help the mom and pops get started.

Otherwise, the only other option is that the government would have to mandate special benefits, higher minimun wagesm great health care, more paid holidays, etc. to make the Big Boxes provide higher quality employment benefits. The “mom and pops” would be given their choice as to what benefits to provide, as they may only have one “employee” or a relative.

At one time in our history, there was no income tax! Only Import Duty paid for the entire Federal Government. If we did that, all of our current income tax could then be available as new net income.

As the US is the major market for all of the foreign manufactures, let them pay, as they did it in the past. Let’s do what is good for America for once.
