The shortage of affordable cars is being blamed on a shortage of microchips. What most people don’t know is semiconductors used in automobiles are generally low end chips with low profit margins. Semiconductor manufacturers prefer to make and sell high end chips for obvious reasons.
So, when companies like Taiwan Semiconductor restarted production last year, the chips that got priority were high end chips, not low end auto chips. We designed the entire auto supply chain on readily available and inexpensive chips, only to find that without them, you had a vehicle that is unsalable and inoperable. Thus, vulnerabilities in our system are laid bare for the world to see.
